Choosing Meaningful Holiday Runs that Give Back
As the holiday season approaches, many runners and fitness enthusiasts begin to consider participating in Thanksgiving Day and other winter holiday races. These races are a wonderful way to stay active during the busy season while also embracing the spirit of giving. But how do you ensure that the races you choose are truly meaningful—both for your fitness goals and for the local community?
At Fast Break, we believe that the best holiday runs are those that not only provide a chance to get out and get moving but also give back to the community. From helping local charities to fostering a sense of togetherness, these races do more than just test your stamina. They make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
In this post, we’ll highlight three fantastic holiday races in the Chattanooga area—the 2024 Grateful Gobbler, the 2024 Fitness Central Turkey Trot, and our very own Fast Break Cinnamon Bun Run—and explain how they support the local community. All three are perfect examples of races that align with the spirit of giving and can make your holiday season even more meaningful.
1. 2024 Grateful Gobbler – November 28th – Supporting the Maclellan Shelter for Families
The Grateful Gobbler 5K is an annual tradition here in Chattanooga. On Thanksgiving morning, runners and walkers of all levels gather for a scenic 5K course through the heart of the city, starting and finishing at Coolidge Park. What makes the Grateful Gobbler truly special is its deep commitment to supporting those in need. The race raises funds for the Maclellan Shelter for Families, an emergency homeless shelter located on site at the Community Kitchen on 11th Street in Chattanooga. The Shelter features 13 units with 68 beds for families experiencing homelessness. The Shelter provides a stable environment for families to remain together as they search for permanent housing solutions.
By participating in the Grateful Gobbler, you're not just running for your health or a shiny medal—you’re actively contributing to an important cause. The race helps fund programs that provide shelter, food, and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness. In a time when many are reflecting on what they’re grateful for, the Grateful Gobbler is a perfect way to give back.
Whether you're a seasoned runner or a first-time participant, the Grateful Gobbler is designed to include everyone, with options for timed or untimed runs and walks. The atmosphere is family-friendly and festive, with live music, fun costumes, and a post-race celebration that reflects the joy of the holiday. It’s a race that brings people together, with the shared goal of making a positive impact on those who need it most.
2. Fitness Central Turkey Trot – November 28th – Raising Funds for Local Youth Programs
Another great holiday race in Chattanooga is the Fitness Central Turkey Trot. This Thanksgiving Day tradition, which takes place at the Fitness Central location on Lee Highway (6170 Lee Hwy, Chattanooga, TN, 37421), brings together runners and walkers for a 5K, 1-mile fun run and a Kiddie-K. The event has been a staple of the local community for years, not only providing an opportunity for fitness but also supporting the Chattanooga Track Club’s Youth Programs.
Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit youth programs across the city, helping kids get involved in sports, recreation, and health education. This race is ideal for families and participants of all ages, with both competitive and non-competitive options available. The Turkey Trot is a great way to get the whole family moving and, at the same time, help fund programs that foster teamwork, leadership, and fitness for Chattanooga's youth.
By participating in the Fitness Central Turkey Trot, you're contributing to a brighter future for the next generation. Every step you take helps provide kids in need with access to resources and opportunities that encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. With its festive atmosphere, costumes, and supportive community, this event offers a perfect start to your Thanksgiving Day—and it’s a great way to kick off the season of giving.

Tips for Selecting a Meaningful Holiday Race:
- Look for races that benefit local charities or causes: Events that give back to the community often align with the true spirit of the holidays. Find out where the race proceeds go and how the funds are used.
- Consider family-friendly races: Many holiday runs offer a mix of competitive and non-competitive options, making them ideal for participants of all ages and abilities.
- Support races with a festive atmosphere: The holidays are a time to celebrate together. Choose events with fun themes, costumes, or post-race celebrations to make the experience even more memorable.
- Check for community involvement: Some races have opportunities for volunteers or in-kind donations, so you can contribute even if you’re unable to run.
